What is Osgood-Schlatter?
Osgood-Schlatter is a common cause of knee pain in growing children and teenagers. It affects the area just below the kneecap, where the tendon attaches to the top of the shin bone.
It is often experienced during periods of growth and is more noticeable in children and teenagers involved in football, GAA, running, gymnastics, ballet, Irish dancing and activities involving jumping, landing or kneeling.
This page provides awareness information for parents, guardians, schools, coaches, dance teachers and sports organisations. It also explains how gentle, non-clinical Somatix movement-confidence support may help a young person feel safer and more confident in movement.

Signs parents, teachers, and coaches may notice
A young person may complain of pain or tenderness just below the kneecap, particularly after running, jumping, kneeling, dancing, training or playing sport.
Other signs may include:
- Swelling or a noticeable bump below the kneecap
- Limping or favouring one leg
- Avoiding running, jumping, kneeling or bending the knee
- Sitting out training or losing confidence in an activity
- Changing how they land, walk or move
- Pain that continues after activity
How Somatix may offer movement-confidence support
Somatix uses calm, controlled and age-appropriate movement to help a young person develop body awareness, balance, coordination and confidence. The aim is to support more comfortable movement, not to diagnose or treat the cause of knee pain.
Support may include:
- Gentle movement within the young person’s comfort zone
- Isometric strengthening exercises where appropriate
- Balance and coordination work
- Hip, knee, ankle and foot movement control
- Posture and body-awareness exercises
- Confidence-building movement
- A simple home movement routine for a parent or guardian to supervise
Important information for parents, schools and organisations
Somatix is non-clinical movement-confidence support. It does not diagnose or treat Osgood-Schlatter and is not a replacement for medical advice, physiotherapy or professional healthcare.
All enquiries concerning anyone under 18 must come through a parent or guardian. I do not contact children directly. A parent or guardian must provide consent and remain involved throughout any one-to-one support.
A child experiencing ongoing or worsening pain, limping, swelling, night pain, pain at rest, or unusual symptoms should be assessed by a GP, physiotherapist or appropriate healthcare professional before continuing activity.
Parent, guardian and organisational enquiries are welcome
