Somatix: A Gentler Movement Approach for Stiffness, Mobility and Movement Confidence

Move with Greater Ease and Confidence

Movement does not always need to be faster, harder or more intense to be worthwhile.

For many people, the biggest challenge is not a lack of determination. It is that movement has gradually become more difficult.

You may feel stiff when you stand up after sitting.

Your balance may not feel as reliable as it once did.

Your neck, shoulders, back or hips may frequently feel tight.

You may have lost confidence in exercising, or perhaps traditional exercise classes simply feel too fast or demanding.

This is where Somatix takes a different approach.

Somatix is a calm, structured movement programme designed to help people explore movement with greater ease, awareness, balance and confidence.

Rather than concentrating only on muscles and joints, Somatix also considers the information the brain and nervous system use to organise movement.

Movement Is More Than Muscles and Joints

When we move, the body is not operating as a collection of separate muscles.

The brain is continually receiving and integrating information relating to body position, movement, balance and the surrounding environment. Proprioception — our ability to sense the position and movement of our body — is an important part of this process and contributes to motor control and stability.

Vision and the balance system also contribute to how we orient ourselves and control movement. Vestibular processing works together with other sensory information to help the nervous system represent self-motion and organise motor responses.

That is why Somatix looks beyond the simple question:

“Which muscle is tight?”

We can also ask:

“What information is the nervous system receiving, and could changing that input alter how the movement feels?”

A Different Way to Think About Stiffness

Feeling stiff does not necessarily mean that a muscle simply needs to be stretched harder.

Muscle and joint mobility certainly matter, and stretching can be useful.

But movement can also be influenced by coordination, sensory information, balance, confidence, previous experience and how comfortable a person feels performing a movement.

This is why Somatix often uses a simple principle:

TEST → INPUT → MOVE → RETEST → LEARN

For example, someone might gently test how far they can comfortably reach towards their toes.

We then introduce a simple movement or sensory input.

That might involve:

  • eye tracking

  • eye and head coordination

  • balance

  • proprioceptive work

  • gentle nerve sliding or gliding

  • foot and ankle movement

  • breathing

  • controlled whole-body movement

We then repeat the original movement.

Sometimes nothing changes.

Sometimes the movement feels easier.

Sometimes the person moves further or feels more confident.

The important part is not forcing an improvement.

The retest gives us information.

Proprioception and Body Awareness

Proprioception is sometimes described as our internal sense of where the body is.

It allows you to know, for example, where your arm or foot is positioned without continually having to look at it.

Research has examined proprioceptive training in relation to both proprioceptive ability and motor performance, including the use of balance-based exercises.

Within Somatix, proprioceptive work can be very simple.

It might involve noticing pressure through the feet, changing weight from one side to the other, moving an ankle in different directions, standing with additional support, or gently changing the position of the arms and legs.

These movements are not designed to exhaust the body.

They are designed to give the nervous system clearer movement information to work with.

Balance Is Something We Can Work On

Balance is another important part of Somatix.

This becomes particularly relevant as we get older or after a period of reduced activity.

International physical-activity guidance specifically recommends that older adults include activity emphasising balance and coordination, alongside other forms of physical activity.

But balance training does not have to mean standing precariously on one leg.

Somatix can begin with very small changes:

holding a chair for support, shifting body weight, changing foot position, turning the head gently, moving the eyes or combining simple upper- and lower-body movements.

The emphasis is always on control rather than difficulty.

Why Somatix Uses the Eyes and Head

The eyes are not separate from movement.

Vision gives the nervous system important information about our position and surroundings, while eye, head and vestibular information contributes to orientation and motor control.

That means a Somatix class may occasionally include movements that look surprisingly simple.

You might follow your thumb with your eyes.

You might move the eyes while keeping the head still.

You might gently coordinate eye movement with a head turn.

Then we may repeat a movement and see whether anything feels different.

Again, we are not claiming that an eye exercise somehow “fixes” a tight muscle.

We are simply changing an input and observing the movement response.

Gentle Nerve Sliding and Gliding

Another feature of Somatix is the careful use of gentle neurodynamic sliding and gliding techniques, sometimes called nerve flossing.

These are different from simply holding a strong stretch.

Neurodynamic exercises use coordinated movements of different joints to alter mechanical loading along a neural pathway. Research into neural mobilisation suggests potential benefits in some musculoskeletal and nerve-related conditions, although results vary and it should not be treated as a universal solution for pain or stiffness.

Within Somatix, I favour gentle sliders rather than aggressive tensioning.

The movement should feel controlled and comfortable.

If somebody experiences significant pain, increasing numbness, weakness or other concerning neurological symptoms, that is not something to push through in a movement class and appropriate medical or physiotherapy assessment should be sought.

Breathing and Comfortable Movement

Breathing is also part of movement.

Rather than forcing deep breaths or using complicated breathing patterns, Somatix may simply encourage participants to notice whether they are breathing comfortably while moving.

People often hold their breath when concentrating or when they are unsure of a movement.

Slowing things down gives them an opportunity to notice that response and find a more comfortable way of moving.

Complexity Without Intensity

One of the principles I am developing within Somatix is something I call:

Complexity without intensity.

An exercise does not have to become physically harder to become more interesting to the nervous system.

Imagine a simple standing weight shift.

We could perform it normally.

Then we might add:

  • a gentle head turn

  • an eye movement

  • an opposite arm movement

  • a change in foot position

  • a contralateral arm-and-leg pattern

The person is still exercising at a gentle level.

But the brain now has more sensory and coordination information to process.

For me, this is one of the most exciting aspects of Somatix.

We can enrich movement without turning every exercise into a workout.

Movement Confidence Matters

Many people stop exercising not because they do not understand that movement is important, but because movement has stopped feeling comfortable or achievable.

They may worry about keeping up.

They may feel unsteady.

They may have tried classes that were simply too fast.

Or they may have lost confidence after months or years of reduced activity.

Somatix removes that pressure.

There is no race.

There is no requirement to touch your toes, stand on one leg or copy somebody else's range of movement.

The starting point is:

What can you comfortably do today?

And then we build from there.

Physical activity and appropriately adapted exercise are widely recognised as valuable for health, and guidelines emphasise taking a person's needs, preferences and abilities into consideration.

What Might a Somatix Class Include?

Depending on the group and the individuals taking part, a Somatix class may include:

  • gentle mobility

  • balance and coordination

  • proprioceptive exercises

  • body awareness

  • eye tracking

  • eye and head coordination

  • comfortable breathing awareness

  • gentle nerve sliding and gliding

  • foot and ankle sensory work

  • contralateral movement

  • seated or supported movement

  • simple test-and-retest exercises

Not every person needs every exercise.

And not every movement produces an immediate change.

That is important.

Somatix is about exploration, observation and gradual learning, rather than promising that one particular technique will work for everyone.

Bringing Neurology and Biomechanics Together

Traditional exercise quite rightly considers things such as strength, mobility, joints and muscles.

Somatix does not replace those ideas.

Instead, I am increasingly interested in what happens when we also consider the nervous system and sensory side of movement.

Biomechanics tells us a great deal about how the body moves.

Neurology helps us understand how that movement is controlled and coordinated.

Somatix brings those ideas together in a practical, accessible way.

The exercises themselves do not need to look complicated.

Sometimes the smallest movement can teach us something.

Gentle Movement With a Real Purpose

Somatix continues to evolve as I learn more about the relationship between the body, brain and nervous system.

But its purpose remains very simple:

To help people move with greater ease, awareness, balance and confidence.

Not by pushing harder.

Not by trying to keep up with everybody else.

And not by assuming that every feeling of stiffness simply needs more stretching.

Instead, we explore movement.

We change the input.

We observe the response.

And gradually, we learn more about what helps each individual move comfortably and confidently.
